How to Receive God’s Greatest Gift to You

Have you ever wondered what your life is worth? Do you ever question the value of your life? Have you ever asked, “What am I worth as a human being?”
If so, Richard Roberts believe I have a message for you that will answer your questions once and for all. I believe it can change your life forever.
I want to share with you a verse from God’s Holy Word that I learned as a little boy sitting on my Dad’s knee. It’s a verse that will show you what your life is worth:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life (John 3:16).
My friend, Richard Roberts want you to know that God says your life is worth so much that He gave His only son—Jesus Christ—to die on a cross for your sins. God’s greatest gift to you is the gift of eternal life, which can begin right now. But to receive that gift you must first understand that God has paid a price through the life of Jesus that this wonderful gift might be yours forever.
God has a need for you
You might say to me, “Richard why would God do that for me? Why would God pay such a tremendous price for my life?”
The answer is that God has a need for you, and He created you to have a personal relationship with Him. No other person can ever fill the place created in God’s heart just for you.
A man said to me recently, “Richard, how could God have a need? He’s up there in heaven with all those riches. He’s walking on streets of gold. The walls are made out of jasper and the gates are made out of pearl. He couldn’t possibly have a need!”
I said, “Oh, but he does! God has a need to win you and me back to Him. You see, God created mankind for Himself. But in the Garden of Eden man chose to go his own way. And through this choice, the devil stole mankind away from God. Ever since that time, God’s need has been to restore mankind back to Himself.”
Let me tell you a story that illustrates what I am saying. A little boy once fashioned a sailboat of wood and paper and took it behind his house to a little stream. He set the boat on the water and watched it as it sailed.
Suddenly the wind began to blow and the rain began to fall. Before the little boy realized it the wind had carried the boat downstream and out of sight. Thinking he’d never see his sailboat again, he went back home, with tears streaming down his face.
The days and weeks went by until one afternoon the little boy went downtown with his dad to do some shopping. As they passed a secondhand store the little boy looked in the window and there was a sailboat. It looked a lot like his. His eyes brightened up, and quickly he ran inside and picked the boat up and turned it upside down. He found the initials that he’d carved with his own pocket knife. And, joyfully, he bought the sailboat from the merchant of the store.
As they drove back home his dad overheard the little boy, as he held the boat close to him, saying, “Little boat, little boat, you’re twice mine.”
His dad asked, “Son, why do you keep saying, ‘Little boat, little boat, you’re twice mine?’”
The boy said, “Daddy, it is mine twice. It’s mine first because I made it with my own hands. And it’s mine twice because I bought it back.”
My friend, that’s the story of God… and the story of what your life is worth. For with His own hands, God made you and me. To Him you are unique and irreplaceable. Even when you and I had gone our own way, God longed to have us back. And through the shed blood of Jesus Christ on Calvary, He bought us back. He has paid the purchase price for salvation.
God will never love you more than He does right now, and He will certainly never love you less. He created you to be His. And He loves you as His own.
God made His love an act of giving
The devil will tell you that your life is worth the world, because that’s what he offered Jesus. The Bible says in Matthew 4:8-11 that he took Jesus up to a high mountain and showed Him the kingdoms of the world and said, “All this I will give you if you bow down and worship me.”
The devil will try to devalue your life by telling you it is worth the world. But God will tell you that your life is worth much more than that. More than the worth of the entire world. More than the worth of the whole universe. Your life is worth the life of His only begotten Son—and that is what God gave out of His great love for you.
Did you know that it’s impossible to love without giving? Oh, now it’s easy enough to give without loving. But you cannot truly love without giving. John 3:16 tells us that God “so loved… that He gave.”
God’s love for you and me was so great that He did the only thing He could do—He made His love an act of giving. He gave His Son Jesus Christ to die on a cross and pay the price for our salvation… to show us what we are really worth to Him.
You have a need for God
It is true that you and I are worth the life of Jesus Christ. It is true that God has a need for us. But it is also true that you and I have a need for God. We have a need for God that only He can fill.
Now some people recognize their need for God early in life. But many people live years and years of meaningless, purposeless lives before they finally recognize their need for Him. I heard about a man named Jim who was like that. He had dealt God out of his life until it was almost too late.
In the early years, Jim was a successful businessman. And for many years that seemed to be enough. Then Jim hit some hard times. He went through many severe struggles and lost everything of value he ever had. Eventually Jim just gave up on life and wandered around town as a vagrant. He became known as Old Jim, a sort of town character.
But one day, Jim finally came to himself and remembered what he had learned in church as a child. For the first time in his life he realized he needed Jesus Christ.
Not knowing what to do next, Jim wandered into a nearby church. He stayed only a short time, and then he left. The next morning and for several mornings after, he continued the same ritual: entering the church for just a brief time, then leaving again very shortly.
Finally, a woman who lived across the street noticed Jim going in and out of the church every morning. She became worried and telephoned the pastor of the church, and told him about Old Jim’s visits.
The next morning while the pastor was in his office, he happened to see Jim come into the church. Jim walked up to the altar and knelt. He looked up and said, “Jesus, this is Jim. Jesus, this is Jim. Jesus, this is Jim.” Three times he repeated those same words. The pastor started down the aisle of the church, but by the time he came to the front, Jim had disappeared.
The next morning the pastor was reading the newspaper and noticed the account of a serious automobile accident. It stated that Old Jim had been hit by a car, was now in the hospital, and was not expected to live.
Feeling compassion for the old man, the pastor decided it was time to meet this mysterious visitor to his church. He drove to the hospital, found Jim’s room, and went inside. Walking over to where Jim lay in the bed, he shared his purpose in coming there. “Jim,” he said, “I’m the pastor of the church where you’ve been coming to pray every morning. I heard about your accident. Is there anything I can do?”
Jim looked up and said, “Pastor, I’m glad you came. Early this morning a wonderful thing happened. I was lying here in bed, not knowing if I would live or die, when I became aware of a voice—it was like an inner impression—saying, ‘Jim, this is Jesus.’ Then again it said, ‘Jim, this is Jesus.’ And the third time, ‘Jim, this is Jesus.’ Then I had the greatest feeling I have ever felt. A deep peace settled in my heart and I knew that everything was going to be all right with me.”
That day Jim accepted God’s greatest gift of all—the gift of eternal life. He responded to God’s love and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior.
When I remember the story of Jim I’m reminded of how real God’s love is for you and me. He loves us as we are—whether rich or poor, tall or short, young or old. He loves us so much that He gave the life of His only Son to pay the price for our salvation and to show us how much we are worth to Him. There were no guarantees that anyone would ever respond… but He gave in love to save you and me.
Have you ever responded to God’s great love for you? Have you received His gift of forgiveness for your sins? Have you given your life to god for Him to take control? Have you entered the abundant life which Jesus purchased for you by His shed blood on Calvary?
If not, there’s no better time than today. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:2, “Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
My friend, you may never have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ. You may never have said, “God, I’ve sinned and I know it.” You may never have taken stock of what your life is really worth. If you haven’t, I want you to pray this prayer with me and begin today to get into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
O Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner. Please forgive me and give me a new start. I take Jesus Christ, Your only begotten Son, to be my Lord and Savior. I believe He went to the cross for me. I believe He paid the price for my salvation. And now I take Jesus into my heart. By faith, I accept You, Lord. Thank You, Jesus, for coming into my heart. Amen.
Now, my friend, I want to pray especially for you:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for sending Jesus. I thank You that beyond any doubt Your gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ is the greatest gift we could ever receive.
And now, dear friend, I pray for you. I pray that you will feel the love of God completely surrounding you. I pray that you will know and experience the truth that God loves you—and that in loving you, He has given you the greatest gift of all. I pray that you will know the value God places upon your life and your relationship to Him—that in God’s eyes you are unique and irreplaceable.
And I pray that this day will be a new beginning for your life. And from the crown of your head to the soles of your feet you will become a new creation through your relationship with Him. In Jesus’ name. Amen and amen.
