The gift of discernment by Richard Roberts
And then if you will remember, after they gave the tongue and the interpretation of tongues, it turned into a prophetic word, which was an example of how several of the gifts of the Spirit can operate at the same time.
Now their word turned toward you as students, their word toward ORU, if you will remember that. So you had several things operating at the same time. And so the most important thing I wanted to say to you this morning about the operation of the gift of tongues and the gift of interpretation of tongues is that you don’t see it very often. And when you do see it, you’ve got to discern its genuineness.
Now we spoke of the operation of the gift of discernment, the gift of discerning of spirits. And let me give a further answer to your question. How do you know when it’s real, how do you know when it’s not?
When a word is given to you and it’s really of God, it will hit you like a two-by-four, and it will resonate in your spirit and you just know it’s God. There are other times when something is said, and it bounces off, and you say, “Something’s wrong.” You may not say, “That’s wrong,” but you say, “That doesn’t feel right.” You’ve all had that kind of experience.
And God, if you’ll allow Him to, God will manifest that ability in you to discern the difference. I have been in services like he was, where something was given, which I knew was not of God.
I didn’t jump up and say, “You’re out of order. That’s not of God,” although I have stopped things like that before.
For example, I remember once I was preaching, and right in the middle of the message there was a man who stood up and began shouting in tongues. And I told him to shut up. He was out of order. And he said, “This is of God.”
